How it works in your session
-
Assessment first. We decide whether needling suits your problem, and which type.
-
Explain and agree. We tell you which muscles and why. Prefer not to? We'll use other techniques.
-
Needling. Usually a few needles, left in briefly or used with small movements. For electro, small clips attach to the needles for a few minutes.
-
Hands-on work around the area, then your plan.

Most people feel very little going in. On a tight spot you may feel a deep ache or a quick twitch, which passes fast. Mild soreness for a day or two is normal.
Two ways we use needling
1
Dry needling
Very fine, sterile, single-use needles placed into tight, sensitive points in a muscle, often called trigger points. The aim is to ease tension and sensitivity in that area so the rest of your treatment works better. "Dry" means nothing is injected.
2
Electro dry needling
The same fine needles, connected to a small battery-powered unit that sends a gentle electrical pulse between them. It feels like a light tapping or pulsing in the muscle, and we set the intensity to what's comfortable for you. We use it for larger or deeper muscles, or when standard needling alone isn't enough.
Where we commonly use it
-
Neck and upper back tightness, including tension headaches
-
Shoulder and rotator cuff tightness in lifters and swimmers
-
Deep glute and hip tightness in runners
-
Calf tightness and recurring calf niggles
-
Hamstring and quad tightness during heavy training
-
Lower back muscle tension
Dry needling FAQs
-
Is it safe? Our therapists who needle have completed dry needling training and use sterile, single-use needles. Tell us if you're pregnant, take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder or a needle phobia, as needling may not suit you.
-
Who shouldn't have electro dry needling? Tell us first if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device, epilepsy, a heart condition, or are pregnant. In those cases we'll use standard needling or other techniques instead.
-
Does electro dry needling hurt? It shouldn't. It feels like a pulsing or tapping in the muscle. We start low and only increase it to a level you're comfortable with.
-
Can I train afterwards? Light activity is fine. Skip very heavy training on the needled area for 24 hours.
-
Should I have it before a race? Avoid it in the 2–3 days before a key race. Earlier in your build is better.
-
Can I claim it on health insurance? When it's part of a remedial massage session with an eligible therapist, the session can usually be claimed through HICAPS. Check your extras cover.
