Myofascial Cupping in Bondi Junction

Static cups to calm an irritable area. Mobilising cups to free up a stiff one. Always paired with movement and a plan.

What is myofascial cupping?

Massage presses into the tissue. Cupping does the opposite: suction lifts and stretches the skin and the tissue underneath. It's a different input, and some people tolerate it better than deep pressure, especially over sensitive or heavily muscled areas.

The research suggests cupping may give short-term relief and a better feel of movement for some muscle and joint problems. The effects are modest, so we treat it as one tool inside a sports or remedial massage session, never a cure on its own.

Static vs mobilising cupping

1

Static cupping

Cups stay on one area for about 5–10 minutes. We use it when an area is tight and irritable and deep pressure would be too much, like the upper traps or lower back. Calming and low effort. This is the type that leaves the round marks.

2

Mobilising cupping

Oil lets the cup glide along the muscle, or cups stay put while you move the joint: shoulder circles, hip rotations, ankle pumps. We use it when a joint feels stiff and the tissue around it feels "sticky", like hips after long sitting, the mid-back or calves. Marks are much lighter or absent.

Cupping FAQs

  • Does cupping "detox" you or break up fascia? No. It doesn't detox or literally break anything up. It gives you a window of easier movement, and the exercises are what make it last.

  • How long do the marks last? Usually 3–10 days. They're superficial bruising from the suction, not an injury, and they don't show how well the session worked. If you've got the beach or an event coming up, ask for mobilising cups.

  • Who should be careful with cupping? Tell us first if you take blood thinners or have a clotting condition, have fragile or sunburnt skin, a skin infection or open wound in the area, or are pregnant. We'll adjust the approach or use another technique.

  • What should I do afterwards? Expect mild tenderness for a day or two. Keep moving, drink water, keep fresh marks out of hot sun, and skip an intense session on the same area straight after.

  • Can I claim it on health insurance? When it's part of a remedial massage session with an eligible therapist, the session can usually be claimed through HICAPS.
