What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is hands-on soft tissue treatment built around training. It focuses on the muscles and tendons that carry your training load: calves and Achilles for runners, shoulders and upper back for lifters and swimmers, hips and hamstrings for field sport players.

Every session starts with a short assessment. Then we choose the techniques that suit you: deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, stretching, and dry needling or cupping when they fit. You don't need to know which technique you need. That's our job.

What happens in your session

  1. Chat and assessment. Where it hurts, how long, what your training looks like, how you move.

  2. Treatment. Targeted hands-on work, plus needling or cupping if it suits.

  3. A plan. What we found, what to do between sessions, and when to come back if you need to.

Sports massage FAQs

  • Is sports massage only for athletes? No. If you exercise regularly, or your job makes you stiff and sore, it's for you.

  •  What's the difference between sports and remedial massage? Sports massage is built around training and recovery. Remedial massage focuses on a specific pain or injury. Most of our sessions use both, so book the same appointment either way.

  • How often should I come in? Most people in regular training come every 2–4 weeks. During a race build-up or after an injury, weekly can help for a short block.

  • Should I get a massage before a race? Lighter work 2–4 days before is fine. Avoid deep work or needling in the last 48 hours. Post-race, wait a day or two before anything firm.

  •  Can I claim it on health insurance? Sessions with a remedial-qualified therapist can be claimed on the spot through HICAPS with most funds. Check your extras cover.
