Needle Your Way to Peak Performance: The Science Behind Dry Needling

Updated: Sep 22

Hello there, I would like to have a look at a topic that may seem frightening at first, but believe me, it is a game changer. Now, I know what you are thinking: Needles? NO WAY!!! But hear me out. Dry needling is not your usual doctor's visit. It is a cutting-edge technique that is changing how we handle muscle tension, pain alleviation, and athletic performance

It's funny to think that, the practice of using needles dates back around 3000 years ago. Believe it or not, the first techniques were quite odd and involved using fish and mouse bones, as well as wooden and bamboo splinters. We’ve certainly come a long way since then!

Let me take you back a few years.

I was playing American Football in Belgium, pushing my body to the limit day in and day out. I went through a couple of big collisions on the field and my neck just blew up. But no matter how much I stretched or foam rolled, I couldn't shake off this nagging tightness and it just felt locked up. That's when I stumbled upon dry needling. I'll admit, I was sceptical at first. But after just one session, I was hooked. My muscles felt looser, my range of motion improved, and suddenly, every day, I felt better and better. Multiple times I would get it and then do my workout. Playing a Quarterback involves using the full rotation of your spine to be able to move and throw the ball.

In this post, I'm going to explain dry needling, explain the science behind it, and show you how it can boost your performance—whether you are a seasoned athlete or just starting out in fitness. So take a seat, have a snack (don’t be that hard on yourself;))), and let us discover some facts about dry needling!

Understanding Dry Needling:

Okay, let us start with the basics. Dry needling is not the same as acupuncture, even if it may appear to be. Unlike acupuncture, which targets energy pathways, dry needling focuses on trigger points—those annoying knots and tight areas in your muscles that refuse to go away.

Think of it as highly accurate therapy. Your therapist uses ultra-fine needles to gently poke and prod those trigger points, encouraging your muscles to relax and relieve tension. And the best part? There is no injecting medication involved, hence the name "dry" needling.

The Science Behind Dry Needling:

Now, let's talk science. When those tiny needles penetrate your muscles, they cause a series of physiological responses that aid in your body's healing and recovery. Your brain releases different chemicals to the area to target inflammation. It is like switching a switch in your neural system, signalling your muscles to relax and release tension.

However, it is not only about relaxation. Dry needling also increases blood flow to the area, bringing in fresh oxygen and nutrients to nourish your muscles while flushing away waste. It is like pressing the reset button on your body, giving you a blank slate to start with.

Applications of Dry Needling in Athletic Training:

So, how does dry needling fit into your workout schedule? Whether you are a Professional athlete, a CrossFit enthusiast, a marathon runner, or simply someone who enjoys staying active, dry needling can be a game changer. It is like giving your muscles a tune-up, making sure they are firing on all cylinders and ready to face whatever challenge comes your way.

I have witnessed it repeatedly. Dry needling has the potential to improve your performance and keep you in the game for the long term, from accelerating recovery after a tough workout to niggles or muscle tears.

Safety Considerations and Best Practices:

Now, I understand what you are thinking: Are those needles safe? Absolutely. However, like with any therapy, it is critical to select a trained practitioner who is knowledgeable in their field. Look for someone who is qualified in dry needling and takes the time to understand your specific requirements and goals.

Do not be frightened to speak up. If something does not feel right or you have any concerns, your therapist should be happy to discuss them. Remember, it is your body, and you deserve the best possible treatment. At BSM we are all about quality. The latest research and updates on this topic are our priority.

And there you have it—the power of dry needling, unlocked and ready to take your performance to the next level. Whether you are aiming to set personal records or simply stay active and healthy, do not underestimate the power of dry needling.
